PRE-RELEASE PROGRAM

Purpose:

The primary intent of the Pre-Release Program is to provide information relevant to life in a free society. Persons who have lived in a restrictive environment need to experience a period of transition in preparation for social readjustment. The success of the readjustment may be dependent on the individual’s ability to master certain life-coping skills. It is, therefore, important that they be provided opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in such areas as self-assessment, decision- making, employment, money management, and civil rights and responsibilities. Once the knowledge is gained and the skills are experienced in simulation, practical application to a real life situation with decreasing amounts of supervision is more likely to facilitate successful readjustment. A husband-wife team will be employed in the community to coordinate volunteers and facilitate the pre-release components.

Program Description:

The Pre-Release Program in Habilitation House and the Academy is based on ten goals that provide opportunities for all students to develop knowledge and skills in:

  • Self-evaluation;
  • The world of employment;
  • The maintenance of physical health and emotional well-being;
  • The use of community resources;
  • Civic and legal responsibility;
  • Money management;
  • The effects of drug abuse;
  • Parole planning;
  • Defensive driving; and
  • Situations that arise during the first 48 hours after release from custody and skills for dealing with each effectively.

Each goal is expanded to include instructional objectives stated in behavioral terms. Suggested materials and activities for each activity are provided. Flexibility of the curriculum structure, however, allows teachers to utilize their own selections of materials and activities based on the student’s needs and availability.

Program Organization:

Pre-Release is designed to be a 72-hour program. The principal based on the needs of Habilitation House and/or the Academy and its operations determines the scheduling of classes. Principals are encouraged to schedule classes to maximize student participation and completion.
