Education: Graduation from a standard senior high school, including or supplemented by courses in business practices, typing, shorthand and typing. Some college desirable with special work in business administration, law, journalism or social sciences.
Experience: Should have considerable responsible secretarial experience, preferably as a legal secretary or legal stenographer.
Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, procedures and functions. Working knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and appliances; of business English, spelling, punctuation and arithmetic. Skill in taking and transcribing dictation; in typing from rough draft or plain copy is desirable. Ability to take dictation at a speed consistent with requirements of work performed. Ability to apply knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, procedures and functions or the principles of office management and supervision to work problems. Ability to work independently on difficult or complex clerical tasks; to keep complex clerical records and to prepare accurate reports from varied statistical or other types of technical information; to compose effective correspondence and to deal with routine supervisory matters, such as assigning and reviewing work of others without recourse to a supervisor; to orient and train other clerical employees; and to interpret procedures and departmental policies to them. Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant and effective manner and to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and departmental key personnel. Ability to prepare and correct legal documents such as pleadings and more complicated legal instruments, under supervision of superior.
Starting Salary: 27,500 / yr
